How to sow Magnolia grandiflora

How to sow Magnolia grandiflora

Magnolia grandiflora sowing period

It is divided into spring sowing and sowing as soon as it is harvested (autumn sowing). Autumn sowing is conducive to germination but not conducive to wintering. Spring sowing requires the seeds to be properly stored.

Magnolia grandiflora sowing method

Seed harvesting and storage

The fruit of Magnolia grandiflora usually matures in September and October every year and needs to be harvested in time when the fruit is slightly cracked and the aril just turns red and yellow. Place the fruit in a cool place for a week to encourage it to crack. After taking the seeds, soak them in clean water for one or two days. Wipe off the white seeds from the aril and mix them with kerosene or zinc phosphide to prevent rodent damage.

sowing

The seeds of Magnolia grandiflora lose their germination ability very easily. For autumn sowing, they should be sown immediately after collection, and for spring sowing, the seeds must be properly stored. Choose fertile and loose sandy soil, kill insects while weeding, and be sure to apply enough base fertilizer. After leveling the bed surface, dig sowing furrows. The depth and width of the furrows should be 5 cm, and the furrow spacing can be kept at about 20 cm. Sow the seeds evenly in the furrows and cover them with shallow soil.

Seedling Management

The seedlings can be transplanted when they have grown 2 to 3 true leaves. The growth is relatively slow during the seedling stage, so pay attention to loosening the soil and weeding in time. Between May and July, top dressing can be applied three times with fully decomposed thin manure water.

Magnolia grandiflora post-sowing care

When the Magnolia grandiflora seedlings grow up, you can choose to transplant them on a cloudy or overcast day. When transplanting, pay attention to the size of the soil ball at the roots of the seedlings, and water them appropriately after transplanting. After planting, Magnolia grandiflora requires post-care, including regular pruning and prevention of diseases and pests.
