How to plant azalea seeds

How to plant azalea seeds

Seed collection

The maturity period of azalea seeds varies depending on the variety, but is generally between October and January.

When the color of its fruit seed coat changes from green to yellow-brown, it proves that the seeds are fully mature.

When the seeds are ripe, some of the fruits will naturally crack and the seeds will be scattered. At this time, the seeds must be collected in time.

Some fruits will not crack. You have to wait until they turn brown naturally before you can pick them. Place them in a breezy place and wait for them to crack before you can collect the seeds. Do not be impatient and open the fruit to take the seeds.

The harvested seeds should be stored in a dry and low-temperature environment and planted in March or April of the following year.

Soil selection

Rhododendron likes fertilizer, but when planting it, you cannot choose planting soil with too much fertility. This is because its root system is relatively weak and cannot tolerate strong fertilizers. Planting soil with too much fertility will cause its root system to rot. Generally, better results will be achieved by using planting soil with moderate fertility and humus.

In order for its seeds to germinate normally, there needs to be sufficient oxygen supply, which requires us to choose planting soil with strong synchronization.

In addition, it is more suitable for growing in planting soil with a pH value between 4.5 and 6.0. You can adjust the pH of the soil before planting.

Potting method

First, choose a flower pot of suitable size and fill it with the prepared planting soil to 6 cm from the mouth of the pot.

Then spread the azalea seeds evenly on the soil surface, making sure the seed spacing is appropriate.

Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, 1 cm thick. Do not cover it too thickly, otherwise it will only increase the difficulty and time of seeds emerging from the soil.

Finally, you need to moisten the planting soil with water to provide a moist germination environment for the seeds.

Ground planting method

The first step in planting rhododendrons is to choose a suitable planting location.

Don't choose a place that is too dark to plant it, you should make sure it can get enough sunlight.

Before planting, you need to deep-turn the soil to allow enough air to enter the soil.

Then dig small holes in the soil, place the seeds in them, cover them with planting soil, and then level the soil surface.

In addition, pay attention to timely watering to ensure the moistness of the planting soil. The seedlings will be able to break through the soil in about 20 days.
