What to do if lucky bamboo is frostbitten

What to do if lucky bamboo is frostbitten

1. Reasons

Lucky bamboo itself is very afraid of cold and has difficulty surviving in a low temperature environment. This is because too low a temperature will reduce the efficiency of its physiological activities, making it difficult to generate enough energy to keep warm.

II. Measures

1. Mild frostbite

If it is only placed outdoors for 1-2 days and the outdoor temperature is not very low, only a few leaves of the lucky bamboo will turn yellow or shrink.

At this time, you should bring it back indoors in time and simply wipe the bamboo surface clean with cotton wool. Look carefully and cut off any leaves that are yellowing or shrunken. Then use newspaper or cotton cloth to wrap the flower pot and branches from the outside, leaving a small ventilation hole, and secure it with a rope. Place it in a warm, semi-shaded room for a few days. Once it has almost adapted, you can remove the external warming material and let it receive sunlight.

2. Slightly severe frostbite

If the freezing situation is severe and some roots and rhizomes are rotten, it should be rescued.

First, you need to bring it back indoors and remove all the necrotic and rotten parts. At this time, you must be careful to remove it cleanly, otherwise it will infect other healthy parts.

Then apply antiseptic to the cut to avoid infection.

Gradually increase the breeding temperature to allow it to slowly adapt to the warm environment. At this time, you should be careful not to put it directly from the cold outdoors to a very hot place, otherwise it will be difficult for it to adapt.

During the recovery period, no watering is required unless the substrate is very dry.

3. Severe frostbite

If the plant is completely frozen above the stem, you can only try your best to save it.

First, saw off all the frostbitten stems and leaves, leaving only a small part of the stems and roots, and then apply antiseptic medicine on the wound. Then soak it in water and place it in a warm environment. It may come back to life in the spring of next year.

Although the success rate of this method is not high, it is worth a try.
