How to deal with the aerial roots of Monstera

How to deal with the aerial roots of Monstera

1. Function of aerial roots

1. The aerial roots grow on the stems. They are brown in color and look like electric wires, so many people call this plant electric wire grass. Aerial roots can absorb harmful gases in the air and help it grow upward. If the aerial roots are used properly, the bamboo in your home will grow healthy and strong.

2. In most cases, its roots will grow very well, which can not only help it absorb water from the air, but also absorb nitrogen from the air.

2. How to deal with aerial roots

1. Cut it off directly

If your Monstera has too many aerial roots and it looks unsightly and messy, you can cut off some of them with a sharp knife without having a negative impact on it.

You can simply cut off the aerial roots that don’t look good or affect its growth or that you just don’t like. But please note that the top aerial root cannot be cut off, because one aerial root nourishes a leaf, and the leaf nourished by the top aerial root is not yet mature. If it is cut off, the leaf will stop growing and the aerial root will grow again.

2. Remove when repotting

If you plan to change the soil or repot your Monstera, you can cut the main aerial roots in the soil short at this time, and then move it to the new pot. The newly planted Monstera will be shorter, more compact and beautiful, and its ornamental value will be improved.

3. Insert into the bottle

You can prepare some large containers, fill them with clean tap water that has been dried in the sun, place them near the Monstera, trim the aerial roots and put them in the bottles. In this way, the plant can absorb water and fertilizer from the pot through the roots in the soil, and can also rely on the aerial roots to absorb water in the bottle. After using this method, both types of roots can work and provide good nutrients for its growth. You don't need to add water to it frequently, nor do you need to take care of it every day.

Just give it enough humidity and the temperature you like, and keep it out of direct sunlight. After a while, you will find that the stems of the plant will become thicker, the leaves will become broader, and it will look more vibrant.
