How to grow sweet potatoes to achieve high yield?

Sweet potato has become an important cash crop for many farmers due to its high yield, strong adaptability and rich edible value. In our country, sweet potato cultivation is very common, both in the south and the north. However, some farmers may encounter problems such as low yield, small tubers and rough skin during the planting process. In order to improve the yield and quality of sweet potatoes, let’s learn how to grow sweet potatoes to achieve high yield.

1. Select the soil

Sweet potatoes have high requirements for soil. Suitable soil should be deep, loose, rich in organic matter and have good drainage and air permeability. Such soil is conducive to the enlargement of tubers and the smoothness of the skin, thereby improving the yield and quality of sweet potatoes.

2. Deeply till the soil

Deep plowing should be no less than 30 centimeters to facilitate the full expansion of the tubers. The use of high ridge cultivation can increase the depth of the soil layer, prevent waterlogging, facilitate management, increase the temperature difference between day and night, and is conducive to the accumulation of organic matter.

3. Improved seedling transplanting method

The traditional 45-degree oblique transplanting method can increase yield, while the "boat-shaped transplanting method" (U-shaped) can further increase yield by 30%. This method promotes stratification and tuber formation of sweet potatoes and increases yield by burying the potato seedlings horizontally with the buds exposed.

4. Turn the vines regularly

Turning the vines can destroy adventitious roots, reduce the excessive growth of stems and leaves, ensure the concentration of nutrients in the taproot, and promote the enlargement of tubers. It is usually carried out from July to the end of August, and vine turning should not be done after September.

5. Reasonable fertilization

Sweet potatoes like potassium, so avoid applying too much nitrogen fertilizer to prevent the plants from growing too fast. The base fertilizer should be sufficient and the topdressing should be timely, especially when cracks appear in the soil, potassium sulfate should be applied to promote the enlargement of tubers.

6. Spray foliar fertilizer

After entering September, spray 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer once every 7 to 10 days for 2 to 3 times in a row to prevent premature aging of the plants and increase yield.

In short, by implementing the above techniques, the yield and quality of sweet potatoes can be effectively improved. When referring to them, you need to consider the actual situation.
