Lotus root planting method and time

Lotus root planting method and time

Lotus root is a root vegetable that can not only be fried, stewed, etc., but also eaten raw. However, it is recommended to ensure the freshness and cleanliness of the lotus root before eating, and take personal health into consideration. For those who are not suitable for eating raw lotus root, you can choose to cook it. Let’s learn together how and when to plant lotus roots.

1. Planting time

The planting time of lotus root is usually related to region and temperature. Generally speaking, the best time to plant is in spring, mostly in March and April in the south, while in the north it may be delayed to April and May. This is because lotus root likes a warm climate and the suitable growth temperature is 20-30 degrees Celsius. Before planting, you need to ensure that the temperature reaches at least 15 degrees Celsius to ensure the survival rate of lotus roots.

2. Seed selection

Selecting healthy lotus root seeds is the key to successful planting. The female lotus roots with full heads, complete neck buds and thick lotus bodies should be selected as lotus root seeds. Lotus root seeds should be disease-free and have at least three nodes.

3. Planting seeds

Before sowing, the lotus root seeds can be treated with chemicals to prevent diseases. When sowing, the lotus root should be planted deeply to promote the growth of the lotus root. The sowing density is determined by the size of the pond, and generally one plant is planted every 30-50 cm.

4. Field management

After planting, attention should be paid to water level management. The water depth should be kept at about 5-6 cm in the initial stage, increased to 15-16 cm in the middle stage, and then lowered appropriately in the later stage to facilitate lotus root formation. At the same time, pay attention to fertilization. Generally, the first fertilization should be carried out when five or six lotus leaves have grown, and then fertilize in time according to the growth conditions.

5. Harvest

When the back of the lotus root leaves turns red, it means that the lotus root is ripe and can be harvested. When harvesting, the lotus root should be dug along the growth direction to ensure the integrity of the lotus root.

The above are the general methods and time for lotus root planting . Specific planting conditions and management measures may need to be adjusted appropriately according to local climatic conditions and soil characteristics.
