How to deal with Phalaenopsis after flowering

How to deal with Phalaenopsis after flowering

1. Check the root system

Uproot the plants after flowering and check the condition of the roots. If there are rotten roots or old roots, remove them all, and then soak them in a solution of carbendazim to disinfect the roots.

2. Trim the flower stems

Cut off the flower stem part of the plant, starting from the position of about 5 nodes from the flower to the potting soil. Cutting off the flower stem can prevent it from competing for the root system or branches, causing unnecessary consumption. If it is not pruned, it may not bloom again, or the flowers may be small.

3. Change the pot in time

Repotting should be done before April, and a drainage layer should be prepared at the bottom of the pot using expanded clay or other materials, and coarse river sand, leaf mold and vermiculite should be mixed into the cultivation soil. Be careful not to press too hard when repotting.

4. Reduce watering

The roots of Phalaenopsis absorb water weakly, so watering should not be too frequent. Pruning of old roots after removing from the pot will result in a weak root system and poor water absorption capacity. Moreover, flowers do not need too much water during the rest period. If watered too much, it will cause excess water and easily lead to root rot.

5. Raise winter temperatures

It is a tropical plant, so it can withstand high temperatures, but temperatures as low as 10°C will affect its growth. It is recommended to grow it in a warm place indoors in winter to prevent frostbite.
