How to grow Kalanchoe in winter?

How to grow Kalanchoe in winter?

The flowers of Kalanchoe are dense and bright, with rich colors and high ornamental value. The flowering period lasts for more than 4 months, hence the name Kalanchoe. In winter, Kalanchoe enters a dormant period, so how to grow Kalanchoe in winter? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. Lighting

Kalanchoe is a light-loving plant and requires at least 6-8 hours of direct or scattered light every day. Place it in a location with sufficient light in spring, autumn and winter, and provide appropriate shade in summer. Rotate the flower pot every half a month to ensure that the plant receives even light.

2. Temperature

During the high temperatures of summer, move the plant to a well-ventilated, semi-shaded place, avoid direct sunlight, and spray water around the plant to increase the air humidity. Move it to a warm place indoors in winter and keep the room temperature above 10℃.

3. Watering

Follow the principle of "water when dry and water when wet", that is, water only when the soil surface is dry, and water in a moderate amount so that the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter and keep the soil in the pot slightly dry. When watering, choose to do it at noon when the temperature is higher, and use water temperature close to room temperature.

4. Fertilization

During the growing season, apply decomposed organic fertilizer , compound fertilizer , general nutrient solution or special fertilizer for Kalanchoe once every half a month. Before flowering, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate to promote flower bud differentiation and flowering. Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter.

5. Ventilation

Even in winter, the Kalanchoe cultivation environment should be kept ventilated to avoid diseases caused by poor air circulation. During the noon period when the temperature is high, you can open the windows appropriately to allow air to circulate indoor and outdoor.

6. Pruning

Properly prune the branches and leaves of the Kalanchoe plant to shape the tree and avoid intertwining of branches and trunks that affect its growth. Pinch off the top in the early stages of vigorous growth to promote branching. After flowering, cut off the dead flowers, weak branches, and overgrown branches in time to avoid nutrient consumption.

7. Pest and disease control

Although there are fewer diseases and pests in Kalanchoe in winter, you still need to pay attention to the health of the plants and promptly detect and deal with possible disease and pest problems. Common diseases include leaf spot and root rot, and common insect pests include red spider mites and aphids. Once pests and diseases are discovered, measures should be taken immediately to prevent and control them. Appropriate pesticides or fungicides can be used for treatment, but attention should be paid to the concentration and method of use to avoid causing damage to the plants.

The above is an introduction to how to grow Kalanchoe in winter. Kalanchoe grows slowly in winter and prefers a warm, slightly humid and sunny environment. Fertile sandy loam is preferred, and the winter temperature should not be lower than 10°C.
