Plant peonies in October and wait for them to bloom next year

1. Planting

Now is the season for harvesting seeds. Huahua harvested a lot of seeds a few days ago and is ready to get started.

Mature peony seeds are black and red. We pull the seeds out of the cracked fruits and sow them immediately after harvesting.

Soak the seeds in warm water for 12 hours to germinate. During this time, remove the seeds that are floating on the water and are not mature enough to increase the germination rate of sowing.

Prepare loose and breathable soil, sow the seeds on the soil surface, and cover the soil with a thickness of 2 to 3 times the diameter of the seeds.

Peony seeds need to experience a certain level of low temperature and darkness to germinate. Generally, after we sow them in autumn, they will only take root but not germinate. They will sprout in April of the following year!

This kind of peony propagated by sowing will take at least 4 to 5 years to bloom, but new peony varieties can be cultivated through this propagation method~

2. Division

Division is our most commonly used method of propagation, which is usually carried out from early September to late October each year. Flower lovers who plant flowers in the ground must pay attention to the time of division, neither too early nor too late will work.

We wait until the above-ground branches and leaves of the peony have dried up, then cut them off, leaving about 10 cm from the base of the stem. We use tools to dig out the roots of the peony and prepare for division.

When dividing the plants, each clump has 2 to 5 buds. Cut along the texture of the root system, apply wood ash on the wound, and place it in a cool place to dry before planting.

It should be noted that the new plants propagated by division will not bloom until a year later, but Huahua has brought a solution to this problem.

When we divide the plant, we don’t have to dig out the entire mother plant. We only need to dig the soil on one side and cut some of the root buds. In this way, the mother plant on the other side that has not been moved can bloom as usual!

Peony division, 1 clump becomes 10 clumps

Peony, like herbaceous peony, is also propagated by division in autumn. This is the time for flower lovers to plant peonies.

When dividing the plants, dig out the entire peony seedling, remove the soil, cut along the texture of the root system, retain 3 to 5 branches in each clump, place them in a cool place to dry for 1 day, and then plant them.

When planting, be careful to allow the roots to stretch naturally in the soil, then support the seedling with one hand and fill the soil with the other hand. When the soil is half filled, gently lift the roots upwards to prevent the roots from getting stuck.

Then continue to fill the soil, compact the soil, water it enough, and wait until next year, you can see big peony flowers!

<<:  Throw the walnut into water, it will grow branches and leaves in 15 days and become a potted plant in 30 days. It will look beautiful when you keep it at home!

>>:  If you don't do this in autumn, the Clivia will grow wildly and become uglier and uglier!
