Garlic growth environment conditions and characteristics

Garlic growth environment conditions and requirements

The main producing areas of garlic in my country include Yongnian County and the northern part of Daming County in Hebei Province, Pizhou City, Sheyang County, Taicang City in Jiangsu Province, Qi County and Hebingma Village in Zhongmu County in Henan Province, and Jinxiang County in Shandong Province. Garlic is a crop that prefers cool climates. After a dormant period, garlic cloves begin to germinate at 3~5℃.

Garlic Growth Temperature

The suitable temperature for garlic growth is 12-25℃, but garlic can germinate at a low temperature of 3~5℃. The seedlings are cold-resistant and can withstand short-term low temperatures of -3C-5C.

Garlic growth humidity

Although garlic is drought-resistant, its root absorption capacity is weak, so the soil moisture must be maintained and watered frequently during the growing season. The humidity should be maintained at 75-80%.

Garlic growing soil

Garlic requires higher soil moisture and is more resistant to fertilizer. It is suitable for planting in fertile, slightly alkaline soil rich in organic matter, but its root absorption capacity is weak, so it is necessary to maintain soil moisture and water it frequently during the growing season.

Garlic growth cycle and process

The planting time of garlic is generally around March to May, which is after the Qingming Festival in spring. The growth cycle of garlic is related to the sowing period. The growth cycle of garlic in different sowing periods is quite different. The growth period of spring-sown garlic is shorter, only about 90-100 days, while the growth period of autumn-sown garlic is as long as about 220-280 days.

Generally, the growth process of garlic can be divided into six periods: germination period, seedling period, bulb bud and flower bud differentiation period, garlic shoot elongation period, bulb expansion period and dormancy period.
