How to propagate dianthus and what to pay attention to

How to reproduce dianthus

There are three common methods of propagation for dianthus: sowing, cuttings and division. Its seeds can be propagated, and its natural reproduction method is generally through seeds. Usually, dianthus is propagated fastest by cuttings.

How to propagate dianthus

If carnations are propagated by cuttings, it can generally be done between December and April of the following year, preferably in January or February. At this time, the side buds of the plant grow healthily and the survival rate of the cuttings is high.

How to propagate dianthus

Dianthus flower division propagation

It is usually done in early spring or autumn. Remove the carnations from the pots, remove the soil from the roots, and divide the old plants into equal parts by hand, with 2 to 3 plants in each clump, which are then planted separately.

Dianthus cutting propagation

Cut healthy young branches as cuttings, about 5-6 cm in length, prepare suitable soil, and then insert the branches into the soil, keeping it moist. The roots will take root about 15-20 days after insertion.

Dianthus flower seed propagation

Seed propagation is generally carried out in September. Prepare healthy and plump seeds, sow them in the open field seedbed, water them appropriately, keep the potting soil moist, and they will germinate in about 5 days.

Matters Needing Attention in Propagating Dianthus

1. Replenish water and provide sun protection

It is necessary to ensure that the carnation has 6-8 hours of light every day. In midsummer, the plant is in a semi-dormant state. At this time, care must be taken to avoid exposing the plant to the scorching sun, and the soil in the pot should not be waterlogged during maintenance, otherwise the roots will easily rot.

2. Prevent and control pests and diseases

There are not many diseases and pests of carnations. The most common ones are calyx rot, rust, gray mold, bud rot and root rot. Once the disease occurs, the diseased plants need to be cleaned up in time and sprayed with corresponding pesticides for prevention and control.
