How to prune a plane tree

When to prune a sycamore tree

The best time to prune plane trees is spring. Spring is the best growing season, so pruning is also the most appropriate. The wounds of the plants can heal quickly after pruning.

Before grafting, the plane tree needs to be cut into 6-8 node long segments and stored in the sand in a storage ditch. After taking out the stored branches in spring, soak them in clean water for 6-8 hours, insert them into slightly acidic, loose, breathable, and water-retaining soil, control the temperature and humidity, and they will soon grow roots.

Plane tree pruning

1. When pruning young plane trees, it is necessary to maintain a certain trunk height, cut off the main shoot to fix the trunk, and select branches in three different directions on the upper part for pruning.

2. When pruning plane trees in winter, you can select two suitable side branches from each main branch and shorten them to form six small side branches. Then prune one-third of the main branches every winter and pinch off the tops in summer to control their growth.

3. Cut off excessive side branches from the plane tree, and allow the remaining side branches to grow alternately, but their length must not exceed that of the main branches. Immediately remove diseased and insect-infested branches, crossed branches, and upright branches to make the crown compact, plump, full, and beautiful.

4. Pruning from the budding of the plane tree in spring to before the leaves fall in autumn is called growing season pruning. The degree of pruning should not be too large. Generally, pruning methods such as bud removal, pinching, and pruning are used.

Tips for pruning plane trees

The best time to prune tung trees is generally when the seedlings have grown 2 to 3 leaves on their side buds and before they begin to lignify. Pinch the soft base of the side branches with your right thumb and index finger and break them hard. Prune the young branches in time to remove the hidden buds at the base of the branches and increase growth.

Plane trees require thorough pruning every winter, which can be done between the time the leaves fall and the time the sap flows in the following spring.

Tips for pruning plane trees

When pruning a plane tree, first prune diseased and insect-infested branches and dead branches, then prune healthy branches such as upright branches, drooping branches, and closed branches. Sterilize the tools used to prune diseased and insect-infested branches before pruning healthy branches. When pruning, pay attention to the location of the buds, and do not leave buds blindly. The buds in the location where they are left should be strong to meet the tree shape requirements and future shaping.
