How many years does it take for dragon fruit to bear fruit?

Introduction to Pitaya Planting

Dragon fruit is a tropical and subtropical fruit. It prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight, is slightly shade-tolerant, heat-tolerant and drought-tolerant, and likes fertilizer and is tolerant to barrenness. It has strong adaptability to the environment and can be planted all year round. The best planting time is in spring, generally starting in March or April, and its lifespan is as long as 20 years.

Dragon fruit is grown in Hainan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan and other provinces in mainland China. Its main varieties are red-heart dragon fruit and white-heart dragon fruit.

Dragon fruit planting results after several years

White-fleshed pitaya begins to bloom and bear fruit 12 to 14 months after planting, while red-fleshed pitaya begins to bloom and bear fruit 16 months after cultivation.

Dragon fruit is suitable for planting in an environment with sufficient light, good ventilation, warmth and humidity. When cultivated in the open field in spring and summer, it needs to be watered frequently to allow the roots to grow better. In rainy weather, drainage measures need to be taken to prevent root rot.

Grafted pitaya blooms and bears fruit

The dragon fruit will bloom and bear fruit about a year after grafting, but if it is not properly maintained, it will take a little longer, and some may even take 3 years.

Potted dragon fruit hanging fruit

If the potted dragon fruit is grown from seeds, it will take 4-5 years of care before it will bear fruit. Some varieties will bloom in the third year, but will not bear fruit. If it is a potted cutting, it will bear fruit in the second year of care.

Why doesn't dragon fruit bear fruit?

If pitaya is planted too densely, some plants will not receive enough light, resulting in reduced yields and even no fruit.

During the seedling stage of pitaya, you need to control the water and fertilizer slightly, otherwise the seedlings will not grow strong enough and will grow too tall, making it difficult to bloom and bear fruit.

Key points for high-yield cultivation of pitaya

For growing dragon fruit, choose a plot with good drainage, loose soil and high fertility. During the entire planting cycle, it needs to be fertilized and watered many times, especially during the flowering and fruiting period. Since the expansion of the fruit requires a lot of nutrients and water, fertilizer should be applied every week or so at this time. If the surface is found to be dry, water it again.
