How to prune potted honeysuckle

Honeysuckle pruning time

It is generally best to prune potted honeysuckle in winter, which can last from December to early March of the following year. The pruning effect is very obvious and is conducive to the plant's recovery as soon as possible.

Pruning branches and leaves of potted honeysuckle

Flat-top pruning : Potted honeysuckle needs to be pruned in time after the flowers fade. The flower branches need to be pruned into a flat-top shape, and then thinning should be carried out, and useless branches should be pruned away, leaving only 4 to 5 thick branches.

Shaping and pruning : When pruning honeysuckle, you need to retain a main trunk with a natural round head shape. Umbrella-shaped branches also need to retain three main trunks and trim the upper part of each branch, leaving 3 to 5 nodes.

Wipe off the tender shoots : When pruning the plant, you can first deal with the crossed branches, drooping branches, dead and weak branches, and diseased branches, and then leave the flowering mother branches for shortening, wipe off the tender shoots that sprout from the main trunk and rhizome base of the plant to reduce nutrient consumption.

Honeysuckle pruning tips

The specific pruning of potted honeysuckle is done in winter and spring. The main trunk should be shortened to ten to twenty centimeters in height, leaving three to five main branches, and three to five side buds on each main branch. All others should be cut off and removed to prevent the plant from only growing taller and affecting its ornamental value. The pruned plants have a coordinated distribution of branches, appropriate density, and clear layers.

Honeysuckle grows fast after pruning

After the flowers of honeysuckle wither, the branches of honeysuckle should be pruned, and then the branches should be thinned out slowly. The second method is to prune weak branches and retain the round trunk.

Precautions for pruning potted honeysuckle

1. Honeysuckle must be disinfected before and after pruning. The knives used must be disinfected before pruning, and the wounds of the plants also need to be disinfected after pruning to avoid bacterial infection.

2. After pruning the honeysuckle, you must control the light and water to allow the plant to recover quickly, and do not apply fertilizer at this time. Wait until the plant has fully recovered before normal maintenance.
