When is the right time to prune?

Nuclear pruning

Walnut trees can be pruned in autumn. Timely pruning can reduce nutrient consumption, which is conducive to achieving high-quality, high-yield and stable production of walnut trees and maximizing economic benefits.

Pruning time

Walnuts cannot be pruned during their dormant period, otherwise it will affect the growth of the plant, making it difficult for the wound to heal, or even causing the death of the plant. The best time to prune is after the leaves unfold in spring. Adult trees can be pruned after harvest and before leaf fall, which is from October to November.

How many times should the branches be pruned for nuclear selection?

The pruning time of walnut trees should be carried out during the growing season of walnuts, that is, pruning can be done from the beginning of budding to before leaf fall.

Core selection pruning method

When pruning the pitaya tree, try to keep as few main branches as possible. It is enough to keep 3 main branches in the first layer at the base, and 2 in the second layer and above. After the trees are formed, it is best to keep 6 to 7 main branches. After pruning, apply fruit tree healing agent to speed up wound healing.

The goal of walnut planting in the first year is to strive to improve the survival rate. Therefore, the new shoots from the main trunk can be retained and the leaf area can be increased as much as possible to store more nutrients and facilitate wintering.

Young walnut trees grow very fast. Starting from the second year, the amount of new shoots grown each year is large. Therefore, they are topped when the new shoots grow to 50-60 cm. Generally, they are not pruned short. It is necessary to retain the branches that are good at bearing fruits so that they can bear fruit early.

Precautions for pruning

For mature trees that are undergoing seedling selection, it is necessary to thin out and reduce the dense branches on the periphery. The focus should be on removing the excessive main branches and side branches on the main branches, increasing ventilation and light transmission, so that the plants can thrive and grow healthily.
