How to propagate Clivia

How to propagate Clivia

1. Seed propagation

1. Prepare seeds

Clivia can usually be sown at any time of the year, but the specific time depends on the seed harvest time. When the seeds are ripe, cut the plant and place it in a cool and ventilated place for 10 days, then take out the seeds and dry them for one or two days. After the seeds are harvested, they need to be sown immediately to facilitate germination.

If it cannot be sown in time, wrap it with gauze first, and then store it at a temperature below 15 degrees, and it must not be exposed to light. It cannot be stored in this environment for too long, a maximum of 3 months, otherwise it will affect the germination rate. In addition, before sowing, the seeds need to be soaked in warm water for 24 hours.

2. Sowing method

First, make sure the back of the seed is on top, and then place it evenly on the soil surface. The soil should be mainly a mixture of sand and humus. Then cover it with sand. The thickness should be twice the diameter of the seed. After planting, water it thoroughly, and then cover it with a layer of transparent glass to maintain humidity.

In addition, in order to make the seeds grow as quickly as possible, you can place the pot in a low temperature place and keep the soil temperature between 20 and 25 degrees. After that, you can water the plants whenever the soil surface is dry, but be careful not to water too much and cause the seeds to rot. Then after about 20 days, the embryonic root will grow, and you can repot it after March.

2. Division propagation

1. Division time

This method can be used in any season of the year, but it is best in spring from February to May and autumn from September to November.

2. Division method

When the Clivia grows to two years old, a small Clivia will grow from the roots. When its leaves grow to between 10 and 15 centimeters in length, you can use a knife to cut the small plant from the root of the mother plant and plant it in a pot. If it does not take root, you can apply rooting water to the roots and then plant it in a pot. Try to cover the roots with clean river sand all around, and then cover them with a plastic bag to maintain the humidity in the pot. Then place the pot in a cool place. After about 20 to 25 days, new roots will grow.
