When is the right time to prune potted osmanthus?

The role of pruning potted osmanthus

Potted osmanthus trees need to be pruned regularly, which can help them bloom earlier, effectively extend the flowering time, and improve their ornamental value.

Pruning time for potted osmanthus

Potted osmanthus can be pruned twice a year, once in late autumn and early winter, and once in the budding stage in spring.

Spring is the most suitable season for pruning potted osmanthus. The temperature at this time is stable at around 20 degrees. It is also the season when the plant begins to resume growth, which causes less damage to it.

How to prune potted osmanthus

1. Trunk pruning: It will not look good if the sweet-scented osmanthus potted plants grow too tall, so you can prune the trunk. Generally speaking, sweet-scented osmanthus potted plants with good ornamental effects will not exceed 80 cm. We can directly cut off the part above the trunk at the height we need.

2. Branch pruning: If the crown of the tree is sparse, you can cut off the larger branches and leave some small branches. If the branches grow weakly, you can keep some branches that are beneficial to the shape and cut off the branches that are too long, diseased, insect-infested, or weak.

3. Late pruning: During the peak growth period of osmanthus, cut off the underdeveloped, overgrown, and diseased branches and leaves, as well as the dead flowers. For branches that grow too densely, thin them out appropriately to increase the light transmittance of the plant.

Precautions for pruning potted osmanthus

Before pruning potted osmanthus, the pruning knives must be disinfected. After pruning the potted osmanthus, the wounds must be disinfected, and post-pruning maintenance work must be done to allow it to resume growth.
