Introduction to Planting Agarwood Trees

Agarwood tree, also known as white wood incense, tooth incense tree, and daughter incense, is a plant of the genus Aquilaria of the Thymelaeaceae family. It is a national second-level protected endangered species. It is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Taiwan, Yunnan and other provinces in China. It generally grows in areas below 400 meters above sea level, but it is also planted in areas around 1,000 meters in Hainan.

Agarwood trees like high temperatures, and the annual average temperature suitable for their growth is above 20 degrees. They are heat-resistant and can tolerate 37 degrees. The winter temperature must not be lower than 3 degrees. They can also grow in short low temperature frosts in winter, so they are suitable for planting in spring every year.

Results of Agarwood Tree Planting

Agarwood trees grow fast. Generally, their breast diameter can reach 6-8 cm after 4-5 years of planting. They can be called mature trees and can produce agarwood. Their growth cycle is about 5-10 years. After about 5 years, the trees can produce a stable amount of agarwood. Agarwood trees over 8 years old produce more agarwood and the quality is the best.

Key points for planting agarwood trees

The seeds of agarwood trees are difficult to germinate. They need to be optimized and cultivated in a nursery and then kept in loose, fertile, well-drained soil. This is usually done in spring, when the temperature is neither high nor low, and the survival rate of planting is very high.

Agarwood trees have strong adaptability to soil and can be planted on gentle slopes, hills, red soil or mountain yellow soil. If the planting land has the conditions, deep plowing can be done, and holes can be dug with a plant spacing of 2 meters and a row spacing of 3 meters. About 110 trees can be planted per acre. Apply sufficient base fertilizer in advance and cover the soil for planting.

When agarwood seedlings grow up, they prefer a semi-shaded environment with a shade degree of 50%. When they grow up, they have a greater demand for sunlight. Only by providing sufficient light conditions can they bloom and bear fruit normally and produce high-quality agarwood. It is best to place them in a sunny and well-ventilated place for maintenance.
