How to care for aloe vera in winter

Is aloe vera afraid of cold?

Aloe vera is afraid of freezing. It is not cold-resistant and has strict temperature requirements. When the temperature is below 5℃, its growth will stagnate. Therefore, if there is heating indoors, potted aloe vera can be moved directly indoors to spend the winter.

If the temperature cannot be maintained above 5°C when caring for aloe vera in winter, you must take warming measures. You can dig a rectangular pit, place the potted aloe vera in the pit, cover it with bamboo strips, and seal it with a double layer of plastic film. If the temperature is too low at night, you can cover it with a quilt or straw mat, and remove the film in time for ventilation at noon.

How to care for aloe vera in winter

1. Watering

When the weather is cold, you can reduce the number of times you water the aloe vera or not water it at all, and keep the soil in the pot dry. It is recommended to water it once every 15-20 days. If the indoor air is dry, you can spray the leaves with water appropriately, which can not only remove dust on the leaves, but also reduce water evaporation, which is conducive to keeping the leaves green.

2. Fertilization

In winter, the growth of aloe vera becomes slower, so it is best not to fertilize it, because the roots of the plant cannot absorb it, which will cause fertilizer damage.

In the cold winter, if potted aloe vera is maintained indoors, it can be fertilized once every 40-50 days. Usually, a urea solution with a concentration not exceeding 2% is used, and the concentration of foliar fertilizer should not exceed 0.1%, so that it can grow more vigorously.

3. Lighting

Aloe vera needs sufficient light to grow. When Aloe vera blooms, it needs very good lighting conditions. It must have four hours of light a day, and the sunlight at this time is soft and will not burn it.

4. Sunbathing

Aloe vera needs more sunlight in winter. It can be placed in a windproof and sunny place or on a south-facing balcony. In addition, place a transparent plastic bag on the outside of the plant to increase the temperature and humidity.

Precautions for growing aloe vera in winter

1. Black spot is a common disease of aloe vera, which will cause black spots to appear on the leaves and affect the ornamental value. Therefore, it is necessary to give it medication in advance before entering winter to prevent the occurrence of this disease.

2. In order to maintain the air permeability of the soil of aloe vera, it is necessary to loosen the soil in the pot appropriately. You can use a single-tooth or double-tooth rake made of bamboo sticks or iron wire to loosen the soil to a depth of 1.5-2 cm.
