Gourd planting time and method

Gourd planting time

Gourds like warm environments and are usually planted in spring, preferably around the Qingming Festival. The temperature at this time is stable at around 20 degrees. Sowing during this period is conducive to the germination of gourd seeds and reduces the time for emergence.

Gourd planting method

1. Site selection and land preparation

Gourds are suitable for planting in loose, fertile, and well-drained soil. After selecting a plot of land, plowing and tilling the land should be carried out to eliminate insect eggs and pathogens in the soil, which will help promote the growth of gourds. When tilling the land, long ridges should be made to facilitate weeding later.

2. Seed soaking and germination

Select good quality seeds in advance, soak them in 45-degree warm water for a day, take them out and wrap them with gauze, put them in a pot, and cover them with a dry towel and quilt to keep them warm and germinate. During this period, add a small amount of water every day to keep the temperature at around 25°C.

3. Sowing and seedling raising

Sow the germinated seeds into the soil, cover them with a thin layer of soil, then water them to keep the soil moist. Provide a semi-shaded, well-ventilated environment and the seedlings will soon emerge. After germination, transplant them according to their growth.

Things to note when planting gourds

Before planting gourds, you can apply decomposed organic fertilizer to the soil to increase the fertilizer in the soil. After that, you can reduce fertilization. When the main vine of the gourd grows to about 0.5 meters, you can apply a small amount of urea. Be careful not to drip it on the roots and leaves to avoid burning the roots and leaves.
