Now we can eat lotus root all year round, but the season when lotus root matures is in autumn, specifically from September to October. In addition, depending on the variety and the growing environment, the time when lotus root matures is also different. In some areas, it is already on the market in July and August, and in some areas it is even available after wintering.

Lotus root origin

Lotus roots are widely distributed in China, including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Guangdong and other places. Most lotus roots mature in autumn from September to October. Early-maturing varieties of lotus roots mature in July to August, and late-maturing varieties reach the fruiting period in late July to early August.

Lotus root planting time and key points

1. Time

Lotus roots are generally planted in spring, mostly in March or April in the south and in May in the north. The reason for choosing spring planting is that the plant likes a warm climate, and planting at this time is conducive to its growth and development. If the temperature is too low, it will not germinate after planting and may even rot.

2. Germination of lotus root seeds

In order to ensure the quality of lotus roots and increase yield, it is generally necessary to select female lotus roots with full heads, complete neck buds and relatively fat bodies as lotus root seeds. The lotus root seeds should be piled in a sheltered place at a height of about 50-70 cm. Straw should be spread underneath and also covered on top. Water should be sprinkled 1-2 times a day to maintain its humidity. The lotus root buds will grow to 10 cm and can be planted.

3. Lotus field selection

Choose a lotus field with deep soil and rich in organic matter. The soil should be very sticky and preferably slightly acidic or close to neutral. The lotus field should be able to store water so that the plants can grow. If planting shallow water lotus roots, the depth of the lotus field should not exceed 80 cm. Deep water lotus roots require a pond depth of 1.7 meters.
