How to prune strawberries? Methods and steps for pruning branches and leaves

Strawberry pruning time

Strawberries need to be pruned when they are growing, usually in the summer. At this time, some runners usually grow, and these connecting stems need to be pruned in time. In the one-season strawberry season, the flower stalks need to be pruned, and some diseased leaves also need to be pruned.

After pruning strawberries, it can avoid excessive consumption of nutrients and provide nutrients for other branches and leaves, which is also beneficial for the results. After cutting off some stems and leaves, you can increase the light to allow it to photosynthesize normally.

How to prune strawberries

1. Summer pruning

Strawberries usually bloom in spring every year and bear fruit in summer. After the fruit is formed, they need to be pruned. The part more than 10 cm from the ground needs to be cut off. This can avoid excessive consumption of nutrients and provide nutrients for the branches, leaves and rhizomes growing below.

2. Prune the runners

Strawberries will grow many runners, which are stems that horizontally connect the plants on the ground, so they need to be cut off and allowed to grow above the mother plant. This will prevent these stems from producing sugars through photosynthesis.

3. Trim the flower stalks

When strawberries enter the growing season, their flower stalks need to be trimmed off. Be careful not to damage the rhizomes. If there are relatively small flower clusters, they also need to be cut off in time to avoid consuming photosynthetic products.
