How many times a year can onions be planted and how long does it take to harvest?

How many seasons of onion are there in a year?

Onions can only be planted once a year , usually in autumn, preferably in mid-to-early September. The main planting methods are broadcasting or furrow sowing. The seedlings will be messy after germination. It is recommended to seed them in time. Be sure to water them to turn green in late March to early April.

Onion Planting Conditions

1. Temperature

Onions have a strong adaptability to temperature. The seeds germinate slowly at low temperatures of 3 to 5°C, and begin to germinate rapidly when the temperature rises to above 12°C. The growth temperature is between 12 and 20°C. If it exceeds 27°C, the onions will be strongly inhibited and will enter a dormant state.

2. Lighting

Onions have a longer light exposure time, which accelerates the growth, development and maturity of the bulbs. It varies from variety to variety. Short-day early-maturing varieties can form bulbs under conditions of less than 13 hours of sunlight, while long-day late-maturing varieties must have about 15 hours of sunlight to form bulbs. During the growth period, light intensity is of great help to the growth of onions.

Onion Harvest Time

It takes 8-9 months from onion seedling to harvest . Generally speaking, it can be harvested around the Dragon Boat Festival in May. The onions cannot be stored directly after harvesting. It is best to dry them directly in the field for 1-2 days before packing them for market.
