Can chrysanthemums be pruned in summer? When should pruning be done without affecting flowering?

Pruning chrysanthemums is beneficial. Timely pruning can reduce unnecessary nutrient consumption and promote better internal ventilation and light transmission, which is beneficial to overall growth. It can also promote the sprouting of more side branches, which is beneficial for wintering in the later period.

Chrysanthemum summer pruning

Chrysanthemums can be pruned in the summer . At this time, it is inevitable that some dense branches and long branches will appear. These branches and leaves will consume excess nutrients and compete for the growth space of the plant, which is not conducive to the light transmittance of the plant. After pruning them, the ornamental value of the chrysanthemum can be higher . However, the best time to prune chrysanthemums is in autumn before the flowering period.

Chrysanthemum pruning method

1. Topping and pinching

When pruning chrysanthemums in summer, you can use the method of topping and pinching, pinching off the new shoots growing on the overgrown branches to eliminate apical dominance. For chrysanthemums with sparse branches, retain the strong main trunk and cut off the remaining branches. After pruning, apply wood ash to the wound to prevent overflow of tissue fluid.

2. Shorten branches

After the growing period in spring, the branches of chrysanthemums grow thinner and longer, which easily consumes more nutrients and affects the germination of flower buds. Therefore, in summer, the branches of chrysanthemums that grow too long should be shortened to 20 cm to concentrate nutrients on the flower buds, which will encourage the chrysanthemums to bloom more flowers in autumn.

3. Thin out dense branches

In summer, the temperature is relatively high and the ventilation is poor, so the chrysanthemums grow too luxuriantly, which will affect the air permeability between the branches and breed diseases and pests. At this time, you should use sterilized scissors to thin out the branches that are growing too densely, and then cut off the dead branches and leaves to improve the permeability between the plants.
