Can you transplant saplings in autumn? The best time and precautions for transplanting trees in autumn

Can trees be transplanted in autumn?

In autumn, you can transplant saplings , and the trees transplanted in autumn will not freeze to death . Because autumn planting is the second best planting season in a year. This season is also the key season for planting many engineering saplings and fruit tree saplings.

However, different seedlings are suitable for transplanting in different seasons. If you simply say that the survival rate will be higher in autumn or spring, this statement is wrong and too absolute. The growth habits of each seedling are different, which determines that their best transplanting seasons are different.

As the temperature rises in spring, some evergreen broad-leaved seedlings with poor cold resistance, or some seedlings with fleshy roots, are suitable for transplanting in the warm spring.

In autumn, the temperature gradually drops. At this time, the trees suitable for transplanting should be mainly cold-resistant species. These tree species are relatively not afraid of cold, and their roots can still recover and grow in relatively low temperatures, so the survival rate after transplanting is higher.

What trees are suitable for transplanting in autumn?

1. Deciduous trees: Ginkgo, Cotinus coggygria, Sophora japonica, etc.

2. Evergreen conifers: cedar, white pine, Armand pine, Chinese pine, etc.

3. Low shrubs: boxwood, purple-leaf barberry, golden-leaf privet, etc.

4. Fruit tree seedlings : cherry seedlings, fig trees, cherry seedlings, chestnut seedlings, etc.

Precautions for transplanting seedlings in autumn

1. Time selection

For deciduous seedlings, the planting time is from the time the leaves fall to before the soil freezes, which is mid-to-late November .

For evergreen coniferous seedlings, the best time to transplant is mid-October to mid-November . For low shrubs, they can be planted from late October to before freezing.

2. Seedling transplanting method

During this period, seedlings should be transplanted as bare-root seedlings. The materials wrapping the soil ball, such as straw ropes, cloth strips, planting bags, shade nets, etc., need to be removed and then covered with soil.

At the same time, in order to prevent the roots of seedlings from being frozen, it is better to transplant seedlings deeply rather than shallowly in autumn. We should choose deep pit transplanting or shallow planting with high soil, and then dig up the excess soil when the temperature rises.

3. Do a good job of watering management

After transplanting the seedlings in autumn, you need to water them thoroughly. First, you need to water the seedlings immediately after transplanting them, and remember to water them thoroughly. Then, you need to determine the number of watering times based on the time of transplanting the seedlings.

Generally speaking, trees transplanted in mid-to-late October need to be watered three times: water immediately after transplanting, water again 10 days later, and water again 15 days later.

Trees planted in early November need to be watered twice. The first time is when they are just transplanted. The second time is 10-15 days later. Trees planted in late November to early December only need to be watered once.

4. Protect seedlings from cold and winter

In order to prevent the newly planted seedlings from freezing or freezing to death, anti-freeze measures should be taken in time after transplanting. First, the planting should be appropriately deepened to avoid the soil layer being too thin and the roots being frozen.

Then, we need to take measures such as insulation cloth, straw ropes, and windbreaks in time to avoid severe cold. For some trees with poor cold resistance, they can be covered with ground film to increase the ground temperature.
