4 reasons for cuttings

4 reasons for cuttings

Cutting reason 1: Cutting propagation is not difficult at all

It is not difficult to take cuttings at home. As long as you know how to select branches and choose the right season, it is not difficult to turn one pot into many pots!

Generally speaking, spring to early summer are very suitable for cuttings. From spring rain to plum rain, the environmental humidity is high and the moisture in the branches will not evaporate too quickly. In addition, spring temperatures are also conducive to the growth of adventitious roots. As for autumn and winter, as long as you use the necessary tools and cover with plastic bags to ensure sufficient temperature and humidity, rooting will be no problem, but the rooting time will be slower than in spring.

Reason 2 for cuttings: No need to wait to enjoy the flowers

Cutting seedlings do not have a seedling stage and bloom earlier, which is one of the advantages of cuttings compared to other propagation methods. For example, it takes 3 to 8 years for the seedlings of woody plants to mature and then slowly bloom. However, because the seedlings obtained by cutting propagation are made from branches of mother plants that are about to bloom, they can bloom as long as there are sufficient nutrients after they survive.

Reason 3 for cuttings: Make backups

The biggest advantage of cutting propagation is that it can completely replicate the characteristics of the mother plant, without any mutation, and completely preserve the advantages of the mother plant.

However, there are some exceptions, such as Tiger Tail Orchid and African Violaceae. Through leaf cuttings, the variegated varieties may lose their variegated nature and grow into full-leaf varieties. In this case, flower stalk cuttings can be used to promote the growth of side buds and may maintain their original characteristics.

Reason 4 for cuttings: saving money

Common small foliage potted plants, such as golden pothos, white spiderwort, and peperomia, are propagated in large quantities through cuttings. If you have such a pot at home, you can save a little money on home greening by taking cuttings. Just a few branches from a friend can make a pot of green plants. You can plant sweet potato leaves, water spinach, red mustard greens, etc. on the balcony, which can also serve as decoration.
