How to grow fig trees well? Cultivation and management of fig trees

Fig trees are relatively easy to keep alive, as they have a well-developed root system. It is recommended that loose, breathable soil be used as the potting soil to avoid waterlogging and root rot. Compared to many other fruit trees, figs are not too demanding in terms of environmental conditions, and are very cold-resistant, with temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius before freezing to death.

Are fig trees easy to grow?

Figs are relatively easy to keep alive . They don't have high requirements for soil, as long as the soil is moist. Just pick a branch, keep it 5-8cm long, and put it in the soil and it will survive. It will start to take root on the second day, which shows how powerful its reproductive ability is.

Fig Care

1. Lighting

Figs like light and should be sown in a well-lit area so that they can receive enough light . If the light is not sufficient, the plant cannot grow normally and may easily grow too long or even fail to bloom and bear fruit. Generally speaking, the more sunlight there is, the better the growth will be.

2. Fertilization

During the fig growth period, fertilization should be frequently applied to supplement nutrients. Usually, fertilizer should be applied every ten days , and nitrogen , phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be used . If fertilizer is not applied for a long time, insufficient nutrients will affect growth and it will not be able to bloom and bear fruit in the later stage.

3. Watering

During the fig planting process, the amount of watering should be sufficient. Once the fig is dry and without water, the leaves will fall off and the branches will grow too long. Especially in summer, the soil moisture should be increased, usually watering every two or three days . But at the same time, it is also necessary to do a good job of digging trenches to drain moisture to keep the soil water permeable and breathable.

4. Pruning

In order not to hinder the growth of figs, the overgrown branches, drooping branches and dead branches should be cut off every spring to reduce nutrient consumption. At the same time, the strong branches should be left to increase the number of fruits.

Fig cultivation

1. Prepare branches

Before cutting, you must first select a branch from the fig tree. You can use the strong branches pruned and shaped in summer and autumn as cuttings to grow seedlings. The vitality of this branch also determines the survival rate of the cutting.

At the same time, it is best to use semi-lignified branches, which are rich in growth hormones, which can promote the formation of callus tissue at the incision site and the germination and development of new roots.

2. Processing branches

First, we need to cut the branches and trim the cut into a horseshoe shape, and the length of the branches should be controlled to about ten to fifteen centimeters.

Then soak the cut branches in the prepared rooting water for about ten minutes. Rooting water can be purchased in flower shops or online. Its main function is to promote root germination and increase the survival rate.

3. Planting preparation

Prepare the required soil before cuttings. The quality of the soil is also the key to survival. Fertile and loose humus soil is preferred, which is more suitable for the growth of branches. At the same time, prepare the flower pots or planting sites.

4. Cuttings

Insert the prepared branches into the prepared soil to a depth of about 1/3, then water the soil thoroughly and place it in a ventilated semi-shaded environment to wait for rooting. After cutting, water it once a week, and remember not to expose it to direct sunlight.

The branches after cutting can be covered with plastic film, which can keep moisture and heat. In about 30-45 days, the branches will take root and sprout, and there will be no problem when new leaves grow.
