How to propagate basil by cuttings How to propagate basil by cuttings

Perilla can be used as an ornamental plant or as food. Eating perilla regularly can increase appetite and replenish the nutrients needed by the body. If you want to propagate perilla in pots at home faster, you can use cuttings, which has a high survival rate and is convenient and fast.

Perilla cutting time

The time for cuttings of perilla can be chosen in spring, summer, and autumn. As long as the temperature is suitable, cuttings can also be carried out in winter. However, the survival rate of cuttings in different seasons is different. Generally, the survival rate of cuttings in March and April is the highest . The spring climate is stable and the temperature is suitable, which is conducive to the later growth of perilla.

Perilla cutting steps

1. Preparation for cuttings

For general family planting, prepare containers and potting soil . For large-scale cuttings, prepare to turn the soil and fertilize, and make a seedbed . Choose sandy loam for cuttings. The cutting branches should be strong, free of pests and diseases, with 4 nodes and short internodes.

2. Cutting method

Select the side branches , cut off the mugwort with a knife, remove the lower leaves, and leave about two small leaves on the upper part. The cuttings need to be dried first , so that they can easily take root when in contact with the soil and are not easy to rot.

Then soak the lower end of the cuttings in a rooting powder solution to help rooting. Then you can plant the cuttings in the soil . The cutting depth is about 5 cm. Don't plant too deep. You need to compact the soil nearby.

Maintenance of Perilla cuttings

It is necessary to maintain appropriate temperature and moisture, and the temperature should be kept between 20 and 25 degrees , not exceeding 30 degrees. The air humidity can be increased a little, spray more water , and the soil humidity should be around 65% .

One week after the cuttings, when the wound has basically healed, it can be exposed to light. Before that, it can be shaded by a shade net when exposed to the ground. The potted plants should be placed in a cool, ventilated corridor with scattered light.
