When can climbing roses be propagated by cuttings?

Climbing roses, like shrub roses, can be propagated by cuttings all year round, but why is the survival rate of cuttings very low in some seasons?

"Whether it can be propagated by cuttings" and "the survival rate of cuttings is the highest" are two different things. Climbing roses can indeed be propagated by cuttings all year round.

However, the survival rate of cuttings is the lowest in summer. This year, I took cuttings of 20 Longsha Gem Roses, but only 7 survived in the end. Only 5 of them actually survived after transplanting, which is already a good survival rate. For some roses, only 3 or 2 out of 20 plants survived.

If you want a high survival rate, spring, autumn and winter cuttings are best, but these three seasons each have their own disadvantages.

Generally speaking, we have the best survival rate of cuttings in autumn and winter, followed by spring, and the worst season is summer. In general, the survival rate of cuttings is the highest in October-November !

How to propagate climbing roses by cuttings

1. Select cuttings

This is very important. If the cuttings are not selected well, the survival rate will be greatly affected. We should choose rose branches that are free of pests and diseases, have not yet sprouted buds, and have become woody or semi-woody. Old rose branches should also be discarded. In this way, the survival rate is guaranteed.

2. Cut cuttings

Choose the branches, cut a section with 2-3 buds , you can cut it horizontally or diagonally. It is best to use sharp scissors, do not cut it, but cut it flat. Then soak the cut branches in rooting water for half an hour .

3. Match the right matrix

There are many substrates for rose cuttings, including coconut coir, perlite, vermiculite, river sand, coarse sand, garden soil, etc., but the best substrate for cuttings is coarse sand or coconut coir plus perlite, which can root quickly and have good root growth in the later stage.

We can use a hole pot or a general flower pot for cuttings. If you don't have one, you can use any container at home that can hold soil for cuttings. Cut a hole at the bottom to prevent water from accumulating.

4. Maintenance after cutting

Some people think that there is nothing to do after the rose cuttings are done, just wait for the branches to take root and grow leaves. In fact, this idea is wrong. Why do some people have a high survival rate of rose cuttings, while some people almost have no survival? The later maintenance determines everything.

After the rose cuttings are done, we cannot expose them to the sun, especially in summer. It is best to keep them in a ventilated, cool or diffused light place. When the weather is hot, spray the leaves with water every day to keep them moisturized, which can be omitted in other seasons.

Usually, the soil in the pot should be kept moist, but not waterlogged. If well maintained, it will take about a month to take root. Now the temperature is low, it will take more than 40 days to take root. If it is cut in October, it will take about 20 days to take root .
