Can daffodil seeds be planted (how to save seeds from daffodils after they have bloomed)

Narcissus is also called Chinese narcissus, and has other elegant names such as Lingbo Fairy, Yulinglong, and Jinzhan Yintai. It is one of the top ten traditional famous flowers in my country.

It is an autumn-planted bulbous flower with good cold resistance and prefers a relatively cool growing environment. It is generally cultivated as a New Year flower and is a very seasonal ornamental plant. The best planting time is between November and December each year.

Do daffodils have seeds?

Daffodils actually have seeds , but most of the daffodils grown in China are infertile varieties. Most of these daffodils have no seeds, and those that have seeds are very shriveled, and the survival rate of these seeds is very low.

When you save seeds, the seeds of daffodils will naturally split from the fruit when they mature . Daffodil seeds can also be spread by animals swallowing them, but few people use the sowing method to propagate daffodils.

In the actual planting process, daffodils can usually be propagated by division. It is best to cut branches from healthy plants for division.

Daffodils are not easy to produce seeds, and they are mainly propagated through bulbs:

Narcissus is a perennial herb of the Amaryllis family. However, because its cultivation method is mainly hydroponics, the nutrients during the entire growing period are almost all provided by the bulbs. Therefore, the nutrient consumption is relatively large, and the bulbs are not easy to revive after the flowers fade.

When growing daffodils in water, the flowering period is significantly affected by light and temperature, and the entire flowering period can only last for about 2-3 weeks. Therefore, it is generally difficult to produce seeds after the flowers fade, and even the bulbs will shrink to varying degrees, so it is generally only cultivated as an annual.

Moreover, after the daffodils fade, as the ambient temperature rises, the leaves will gradually turn yellow and they will go dormant during the high temperatures of summer.

The bulbs in the dormant period need to be stored in low temperature refrigeration before they can bloom again in the second year, so most of the hydroponic bulbs have completed their mission after the flowers wither.

If you need to continue to bloom in the second year, you can mainly plant it in pots:

Chinese daffodils are currently mainly propagated through bulbs, and the quality of the bulbs directly determines the quality of flowering.

In addition to choosing healthy, plump, and relatively uniformly sized bulbs, you also need to pay attention to their place of origin. Narcissus bulbs produced in Zhangzhou, Fujian are of higher quality. Not only are the bulbs plump, but they also bloom in large quantities during the flowering period.

Daffodils can be grown in pots or hydroponically. If you need to recycle the bulbs, it is recommended that you mainly grow them in pots. Compared with hydroponics, soil cultivation not only provides comprehensive nutrients, but also helps the bulbs to grow stronger after flowering and remain dormant in the original pots.
