How to grow California Sunset succulent into an old pile

How to grow California Sunset succulent into an old pile

California Sunset Succulent is a hybrid variety of Crassulaceae and Sedum. It is a very rare orange succulent. Strong light can easily deepen the color and make it mottled, while soft light can make the color pure and uniform, presenting the warmth of the sunset.

California Sunset is a perennial subshrub that is easy to branch. Sometimes it will sprout side buds from the bottom, and it is easy to grow into multi-headed old stumps.

Moreover, one of the major characteristics of California sunset is that its leaves are particularly long and relatively thick.

California Sunset Succulent Cultivation

1. Lighting

California Sunset requires sufficient sunlight, so that the plant will be compact, the leaves will be thick, the leaves will be yellowish, and the leaves will have red edges, which is very beautiful. If there is insufficient light, the stems and leaves will be slender and weak, and the leaf color will appear vegetable green, showing its decadence.

As a succulent plant of the Crassulaceae family, California Sunset likes sunlight very much. When the temperature is above ten degrees in spring, you can move California Sunset to the terrace or courtyard for outdoor cultivation.

2. Soil

The soil for growing California Sunset only needs to be loose and breathable, and does not need to be specially mixed. Therefore, the soil for California Sunset can be a mixture of peat soil, coconut coir and perlite.

3. Temperature

California Sunset is easy to maintain and is suitable for novice planting. In summer, you can even try to grow it outdoors. When the summer temperature reaches around 35 degrees, you should consider shading and ventilation. In summer, you should control watering to prevent heavy rain.

As long as the temperature at night is generally not lower than 5 degrees, there will be no problem even if it is two or three degrees.

How to maintain California Sunset into an old tree

(1) Pay attention to soil preparation

The stems of California Sunset are relatively long and can easily grow into clusters of old piles. This type of stem is particularly drought-resistant, so when mixing soil for California Sunset, succulent lovers should try to add more granular soil.

Succulent lovers can mix the soil for California Sunset like this: 4 parts peat soil, 2 parts coconut coir, and 4 parts succulent granular soil. In humid areas, the proportion of granular soil should be increased.

For the soil preparation of old California Sunset plants, coconut coir is not necessary, but for California Sunset seedlings, try to add some coconut coir to promote the growth and development of its root system.

(2) Watering head

For a succulent like California Sunset, if the stem grows very thick and has only one head on it, it looks very beautiful.

However, most succulent lovers may think that California Sunset would look more beautiful if it grew into a multi-headed old stump.

Therefore, we still try our best to cultivate California into an old multi-headed tree. Spring is also a good opportunity for California sunset to explode.

In spring, succulent lovers can give the California Sunset a little more water. In addition, succulent lovers can fertilize the California Sunset in spring.

(3) Reasonable fertilization

When fertilizing California Sunset, it is not recommended for succulent lovers to use slow-release fertilizer in spring, because the fertility of slow-release fertilizer is exerted very slowly.

If we buy fake slow-release fertilizer, the granules will not dissolve into the soil for a long time, which means they will have no effect at all.

Succulent lovers can use their own fermented enzyme water for California Sunset, and then add a little fermented fish offal and other fertilizers with high phosphorus and potassium content. It is more conducive to the growth and coloring of California Sunset, and it is also easy for California Sunset to bloom.

California Sunset Maintenance Notes

When caring for the California Sunset succulent, you should pay attention to watering it when the soil is dry and when it is wet. Watering the California Sunset is actually quite casual, but be careful not to keep the soil in the pot wet for a long time. Each time you water it, you need to water along the edge of the pot and not directly on the stems.
