Hami melon planting technology and management method

The heart of Hami melon is hollow, with a melon sac inside. The flesh is firm and the taste is sweet. Hami melon is not only sweet, but also rich in nutritional value. It contains sugar, cellulose, malic acid, pectin, vitamins A, B, C, niacin, as well as calcium, phosphorus, iron and other elements, and has high nutritional value.

Hami melon planting technology

1. Site selection

Before planting Hami melon, you must choose a suitable planting site. Try to choose land that is sheltered from the wind, has fertile soil, and contains a small amount of sand. The pH value of the land should be between 5-7. Before sowing, clean up all the dead branches and weeds in the soil, and then spread the base fertilizer evenly on the ground.

2. Seed selection

There are many varieties of Hami melons, and you need to choose according to the natural environment of the planting site, such as Early Gold, Golden Phoenix, Queen, Red Heart Crisp, etc. You need to choose the appropriate variety according to local conditions.

3. Seed treatment

Before sowing Hami melon seeds, simply process them. Soak them in 2% trisodium phosphate solution for 1 hour. After taking them out and cleaning them, soak them in clean water for about 12 hours. Then put them on moist gauze to start germination. The temperature is controlled at around 25°C. They will germinate in about 2 days and can be sown immediately.

4. Planting seeds

The time for planting Hami melon is generally in late April. Water the soil until it is moist a few days before sowing. Cover the ground with mulch before sowing, compact and stick the mulch, then break the mulch and dig holes for sowing. The sowing depth is 5 cm, sow 2-3 seeds in each hole, and dig a hole every 40 cm.

Hami melon management methods

1. Build a shed

The shed for Hami melons should be built according to their growth. Generally, a triangular shed is built for every two rows of Hami melons. The materials for building the shed can be made of bamboo poles. Sharpen one end of the bamboo and insert it into the ground. Tie it tightly with ropes. The height should be about 2 meters. Then, on cloudy days, the vines of the Hami melons can be guided and tied.

2. Intertillage and weeding

In the middle stage of Hami melon, it is necessary to loosen the soil and weed, increase the ground temperature and strengthen the rhizomes, pull out the surrounding weeds, ensure ventilation, air permeability and light transmission, and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests, which is beneficial to the growth of Hami melon.

3. Water and fertilizer management

If Hami melon is given enough base fertilizer, no fertilizer is needed in the early stage of growth. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, some cake fertilizer or chemical fertilizer can be applied. Top dressing should be done before the female flowers bloom. Apply diammonium phosphate, urea, and oil residue per acre. After the first fruit harvest, the second top dressing can be done, and the soil moisture should be maintained at 60%.

4. Pest and disease control

Common pests of Hami melon include aphids and red spiders, which can be controlled with cypermethrin. Common diseases include anthracnose, vine blight, powdery mildew, downy mildew, bacterial angular leaf spot, etc., which can be controlled with triadimefon, thiophanate-methyl, metalaxyl-mancozeb, agricultural streptomycin, etc.
