How to get a high survival rate of Daphne koreana cuttings

How to get a high survival rate of Daphne koreana cuttings

Daphne koreana is also called Thousand Miles Osmanthus fragrans. It is a medicinal plant mainly planted in the south of the Yangtze River Basin in my country. Its main method of propagation is cuttings. Cuttings are divided into two types, one is old branch cuttings, and the other is tender branch cuttings. The survival rate of tender branch cuttings is higher than that of old branch cuttings. Daphne koreana cuttings are easy to survive, but the method of cuttings must also be paid attention to.

Daphne koreana cutting time

The time for cuttings of Daphne osmanthus is usually from the end of February to the end of March in spring. The growth temperature of Daphne osmanthus is between 20℃ and 25℃. The temperature and humidity in early spring are suitable for rooting of cuttings. In addition, cuttings can also be carried out in summer and autumn. In areas with distinct four seasons, cuttings should be carried out from June to July in summer, and from late August to late September in autumn.

Daphne koreana cutting method

When cutting Daphne koreana, good quality branches should be selected as cuttings, which will root faster than poor quality branches. Cuttings should be located at the top of Daphne koreana, with a length of 8 to 10 cm, which are thick, healthy and well-growing. Insert them in loose, permeable, slightly acidic soil. Water them thoroughly after cuttings, and then move them to a semi-shaded environment for maintenance. You can also cover the flowerpot with a plastic bag to keep it warm and moist. Fertilizer can be applied only after the cuttings survive.

Rooting of Daphne koreana cuttings

When grafting, cut a crack at the lower end of the cuttings and sandwich a stone the size of a rice grain. This can greatly increase the contact area between the cuttings and the grafting medium and speed up the rooting time of the cuttings. Alternatively, you can use a rooting agent to promote the growth of the plant root system. After the wound of the cuttings has dried and shrunk, immerse the cuttings in the rooting agent for 1 hour before grafting, which can help the cuttings take root quickly.
