Grafting time of pepper

Grafting time of pepper

1. Grafting time

The grafting time of Sichuan pepper is related to region and temperature. It is usually chosen during its peak growth season, when the wound can heal faster while still ensuring survival. In northern regions, branch grafting is usually done in March and April, and bud grafting is done in August and September. In the southwest region, the direct grafting time is March and the bud grafting is June.

2. Grafting process

1. Select the rootstock: The rootstock for grafting pepper should be selected from trees of similar families and genera, so that the two have a higher affinity, which is conducive to survival and growth. In addition to this rootstock, you can also choose wolfberry, stinky pepper and hericium erinaceus as rootstocks.

2. Scion processing: The size of the rootstock is different, and the scion processing method is also different. If the rootstock is larger, the base of the scion needs to be cut into a wedge shape. If the rootstock is small, cut the bottom of the scion at an angle, leaving a 2-3 cm bevel.

3. Grafting: One month before grafting, remove all the thorns, leaves, etc. about 10 cm from the rootstock. When preparing for grafting, saw off the rootstock at a height of 10 cm. If the rootstock is thicker, make a straight cut in the middle of the section, insert the bottom of the scion into it, and tie it tightly. If the rootstock is thin, you can cut it where the cortex and xylem meet, and then insert the scion into it.

4. Subsequent maintenance: After grafting, the wound should be wrapped to prevent bacterial infection. Then apply fertilizer to help it recover. If planted in the ground, weeding should be done appropriately to reduce their consumption of nutrients.
