Rose pruning methods and techniques

Rose pruning methods and techniques

1. Winter pruning

Winter is the dormant period for roses, when they stop growing. Proper pruning can reduce nutrient consumption. Branches that grow too densely should be thinned out, and dead and weak branches should be removed to promote the growth of new branches in the second year. Winter pruning should not be too heavy, otherwise it will be difficult to recover after spring.

2. Spring pruning

Spring is the growing season for roses, and they can recover quickly after pruning. In order to ensure that nutrients can be supplied to new branches, old branches should be pruned appropriately. Especially for old branches over 5 years old, it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to bloom and they need to be pruned off. At the same time, weaker branches should also be cut off to avoid wasting nutrients.

3. Pruning after flowering

Roses need to consume a lot of nutrients to bloom, and proper pruning can preserve nutrients for them and help their growth. Remove the withered flowers in time and cut off the weaker branches. Dense branches, crossed branches, overlapping branches, etc. should also be pruned to increase internal ventilation and light transmission to help it recover quickly.

4. Pruning after disease

When roses are attacked by diseases and insect pests, in order to prevent the disease from worsening, all diseased branches and leaves need to be cut off. Do not throw them away randomly after cutting them, as they may still be contagious. They should be destroyed in a centralized manner. In order to avoid recurrence, it is necessary to spray pesticides for prevention and control.
