How to manage the perennial roots of chayote during the winter

How to manage the perennial roots of chayote during the winter

1. Methods

1. Apply winter fertilizer: In late November to early December, after harvesting the melons, you need to apply winter fertilizer so that the roots at the bottom of the chayote can accumulate sufficient nutrients and improve its cold resistance during the winter.

2. Clean the garden and kill insects: When applying fertilizer, remove the weeds and dead branches in the melon garden and burn or bury them in a concentrated area. In addition, you can use chlorpyrifos near the base of the plant stem to kill pests in the soil.

3. Cover to prevent frost: Before frost and snow come, you can cover the melon field with straw about 12-15cm, then cover it with film, and press the film with soil blocks around to prevent it from being blown away by the wind, helping it to survive the winter smoothly. Wait until the temperature rises before removing the covering.

2. How to manage

1. After harvesting the chayote, cut off the excess branches and leave only the main vine of about two meters. This can reduce the nutrient consumption of the above-ground part and help the perennial roots of the chayote to safely survive the winter. Then remove the support, prepare the land and apply fertilizer.

2. When turning the soil, leave the roots appropriately and turn the soil 30 cm away from the plant to ensure the normal germination of the chayote in the future.

3. Maintain the temperature. When planting in the greenhouse, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature of the greenhouse is not too low. Then spray tree protector and other agents for disinfection to prevent bacteria from landing and multiplying, and promote the sprouting of new buds of chayote.

4. About 10 days before the arrival of cold winter, the melon garden should be irrigated once. The soil just needs to be moist. Appropriate watering can increase soil moisture and heat. It should not be too wet to avoid root rot.
