Which month is best to plant peonies?

The best time to plant peonies is in autumn, especially from August to September each year. The climate is cool during this period, which is suitable for the growth of peonies and allows them enough time to take root before winter. If planted in spring, peony can only rely on the nutrients stored in the fleshy roots to grow throughout the year, so autumn is a better choice.

In the northern region, the time for planting peonies is from September to early October, while in the southern region, the planting by division begins from late September to early November.

Precautions for transplanting peony

1. Prevention and control of underground pests

(1) Soil treatment

You can use 3% phoxim granules and 1% clothianidin granules to mix and spread them, then till the land. This can not only kill pests in the soil, but also keep pests away for a long time.

(2) Seedling treatment

You can use imidacloprid or thiamethoxam suspended seed dressing agent to mix the seeds, such as 60% imidacloprid suspended seed dressing agent, dilute it with water and mix it with peony seedlings to achieve the effect of long-term repelling underground pests.

2. Disease prevention treatment

Common soil-borne diseases of peony include stem base rot, white rot and Phytophthora root rot.

(1) Soil treatment

40% carbendazim-thiram wettable powder or 50% captan wettable powder can be used per mu, mixed with underground pest control products and spread before land preparation.

(2) Seedling treatment

On the basis of 60% imidacloprid suspended seed dressing agent, adding metalaxyl-M, fludioxonil and myclobutanil suspended seed dressing agent can not only effectively prevent diseases but also promote the germination of new roots.

3. Weed control

Many growers believe that peony can be sprayed with closed herbicides immediately after transplanting, but this is actually wrong. Because although the closed herbicide sprayed at this time can prevent some winter weeds, by the time the weeds germinate in large numbers in March of the following year, the herbicide's effective period has expired and the ideal weed control effect cannot be achieved. The correct time to apply the pesticide is in March of the following year, about 15 days before the peony sprouts, so as to achieve a better closed weed control effect. In order to improve the effect of closed weeding, the ratio of promethazine and oxyfluorfen can be increased on the basis of pendimethalin to extend the effectiveness of closed weeding and expand the weed control range, so that growers do not need to worry about weeding problems throughout the growing season.

To sum up, if you plan to plant peonies, it is recommended to do so between September and October in autumn, because the temperature at this time is moderate, not too high or too low, which is conducive to the rapid germination and rooting of peony seeds .
