Management of grapevines in March

Management of grapevines in March

The beginning of spring comes earlier this year, and we are about to usher in "Qingzhe", the third solar term among the twenty-four solar terms. During this period, the temperature gradually rises, spring thunder begins to sound, and hibernating pests and diseases begin to wake up. At this time, most parts of our country begin to busy themselves with spring ploughing. For grapevines, the temperature starting point for root activity is approximately between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius. When the average daily temperature reaches 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, the grape buds will begin to germinate. Let’s learn the key points of technical management of grape vines in March.

1. Thoroughly remove the fallen branches and leaves in the field

Since many pathogens and insect eggs of grape vines overwinter in dead branches and leaves, it is recommended to clean up orchards that are not thoroughly cleaned in autumn and winter again, completely remove dead branches and leaves and weeds in the fields, and move them out of the orchard for burning.

2. Spray amino acid urea solution

Spraying the grape trunks with an amino acid urea solution can help promote flower bud differentiation while reducing wind drying and frost damage to branches in spring.

3. Turn the soil at the right time

For grape vines that overwinter by being buried in the soil, they need to be dug up in a timely manner according to weather conditions. Unearthing the branches too early may cause them to dry out, while exposing them too late may cause the new buds to freeze. The ideal time to unearth the branches is usually when the apricot flowers first bloom. After unearthing the branches, they should be allowed to grow naturally for 3-5 days before being tied up.

4. Carry out garden cleaning with chemicals

The garden can be cleaned with chemicals 1-2 times in spring. The first one is recommended to be done in mid-March, and the second one during the grape pompom period. The concentration of the agent can be adjusted according to the actual situation. A higher concentration can be used for the first time and a lower concentration can be used for the second time. Optional agents include lime sulfur, flusilazole, tebuconazole, etc., and foliar fertilizers such as amino acids and urea can be added.

5. Reasonable application of bud-promoting fertilizer

When applying germination-promoting fertilizer, avoid applying nitrogen fertilizer alone, and instead combine compound fertilizer , organic fertilizer and medium and trace element fertilizer. For orchards that were not fertilized last year, more attention should be paid to the use of organic fertilizers and bacterial fertilizers. In addition to urea, other nitrogen fertilizers you can consider include calcium ammonium nitrate nitrogen fertilizer, slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, etc.

6. Carry out spring irrigation in time

Spring irrigation is crucial to the growth of grapes, especially in our region when there is less rainfall and the climate is dry in autumn and winter. However, attention should be paid to water pollution, ensuring the quality of irrigation water sources and avoiding adverse effects caused by irrigation.

7. Use mulch

Grape mulch helps maintain soil moisture and temperature, promoting grape growth while suppressing weed growth and reducing diseases. This practice deserves to be widely promoted.

The above is an introduction to the key points of grape vine management in March. Of course, you also need to consider the regional climate conditions and the specific growth of the grape vines.
