When should onions be planted?

Onion is a common vegetable with rich nutritional value. The main edible part is the bulb, which has a sweet taste and is very popular. So when should onions be planted? Let’s learn more about it below.

When should onions be planted?

Onions like to grow in a warm and dry environment, but are not resistant to high temperatures, so they are suitable for sowing in autumn. After September, the temperature stabilizes and becomes cooler, which is more suitable for onion growth. At the same time, the autumn climate is relatively dry and there is less rain, which is conducive to the growth of bulbs. It is usually recommended to plant in mid-to-early September. Planting too early may not be conducive to wintering.

How to grow onions

1. Soil

Onions like to grow in loose soil. Before planting onions, you must first level the ground and keep the soil loose. Then add decomposed organic farm manure. After thoroughly mixing the soil and fertilizer , level the ground and dig drainage ditches, and then you can prepare for sowing.

2. Planting

Before sowing, the seeds must be disinfected and germinated to increase the germination rate. Onions can be sown by broadcasting. Before sowing, take a layer of topsoil from the seedbed and sieve it as covering soil. Then water the bottom thoroughly until the soil is moistened to a depth of 15 cm. After the water has seeped down, the seeds can be sown. In order to spread the seeds evenly, mix the seeds with fine sand before sowing. After sowing, cover with seed covering soil about 1 cm thick. After scraping it flat with wooden strips, you can cover it with a shade net or wheat straw.

3. Fertilization

The growing season for onions usually lasts 90-120 days. A total fertilizer or nitrogen fertilizer can be applied early in the growing season to promote early growth of the onion plants. During the growth process, an appropriate amount of phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer are also necessary, which can effectively promote the root development of onions and increase the disease resistance of the plants. After the onions begin to form heads, you can gradually reduce the application of nitrogen fertilizers and increase the supply of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. This helps promote onion head formation and improve quality.

4. Watering

Onions have a high demand for water, especially during the period of vigorous growth and bulb expansion, and the soil needs to be kept moist. During dry seasons, the frequency and amount of watering needs to be increased.

5. Weeding

During the growth process of onions, weeding should be done in time to avoid weeds competing with onions for nutrients. Weed control can be done by hand weeding or chemical herbicides .

6. Pest and disease control

Onion disease and pest control is an important task in onion planting . Check the growth of onions regularly, and take timely measures to prevent and control pests and diseases to ensure the yield and quality of onions.
