How to prune Rieger Begonia after flowering

1. Prune the remaining flowers

The flowering period of Begonia is relatively long and it consumes a lot of nutrients. When it finishes flowering, the remaining flowers need to be cut off immediately to reduce nutrient consumption, accumulate nutrients and promote the next flowering. Pruning dead flowers does not only mean cutting off the withered flowers. The flower branches also need to be properly pruned. You can count down from the position where the flower blooms, and start pruning from almost the second section. Note that if there are many flowers on a branch and one has wilted but the other flowers are still blooming, do not prune them impulsively. You need to wait until all the flowers on this branch have wilted before pruning them.

2. Pruning branches

After the flowers fade, in addition to pruning the remaining flowers, other branches on the plant also need to be properly pruned. Observe the growth of the entire plant, and first cut off the diseased and withered branches. Leaving these branches will be harmful to growth, so you can take this opportunity to cut them off. Afterwards, thin out the old branches, weak branches, and dense branches. In addition to reducing nutrient consumption, it can also increase light transmittance and ventilation.

3. Notes

After pruning, the cut part must be disinfected and sterilized to prevent water from causing rot. If there are buds on the cut branches, don't throw them away in a hurry, you can use them for cuttings.
