How to care for cymbidium orchids

How to care for cymbidium orchids

As the New Year approaches, many potted flowers are undoubtedly a great choice to add to the festive atmosphere. The large cymbidium orchid , with its large flowers and rich colors, is more eye-catching than the ordinary spring orchid. It is not only beautiful but also easy to maintain, showing an atmosphere of elegance and peace. Let’s learn about the maintenance methods of Cymbidium.

1. Pot soil selection

Cymbidium has fleshy roots, so it has higher requirements for soil. Loose, breathable and well-drained soil should be selected, and leaf mold or peat soil should be added, as well as granular soil or a small amount of expanded clay to enhance the soil's air permeability and drainage.

2. Watering management

The amount of watering should be controlled in winter, and watering should be gradually reduced as the temperature drops. It is not advisable to overwater cymbidiums grown indoors. During the growing season, keep the soil slightly moist and increase watering appropriately to maintain adequate moisture. At the same time, use nitrogen fertilizer and phosphorus and potassium fertilizer during the growing season to promote more flowers to bloom.

3. Lighting conditions

Cymbidium orchids are best placed in places with bright diffuse light and do not need to be moved frequently. The plant can grow well in an environment with ventilation and diffuse light. However, in the summer when the temperature is high and the light is strong, you need to pay attention to shade to avoid sunburn of the leaves and prevent sunspots.

In addition, the cold resistance of Cymbidium is limited, especially the potted plants that have just been taken out of the greenhouse . They need to be kept warm and placed in an environment with a temperature above 5°C to avoid spending the winter outdoors. When the temperature is below 2℃, the plants are susceptible to frostbite. When purchasing cymbidium potted plants, you should also pay attention to insulation measures, especially in cold winters, and ensure that the plants are not frostbitten during transportation.

In general, properly maintained cymbidium orchids have high ornamental value, with bright flowers, lush leaves, slender and upright leaves, neat flowers and firm texture, long flowering period, and a flower can continue to bloom for a long time.
