Which month is the planting season for Polygonatum sibiricum?

Polygonatum sibiricum is a commonly used Chinese medicinal material with strong adaptability, a wide planting range, and good medicinal and economic value. So which month is the Polygonatum sibiricum planting season? Let’s learn more about it below.

Which month is the planting season for Polygonatum sibiricum?

For planting Polygonatum sibiricum, it can be propagated by rhizomes. You can dig up the underground rhizomes of Polygonatum sibiricum for planting in late autumn October or early spring around late March. Seed propagation can be done by sowing in March.

Method of planting Polygonatum sibiricum

1. Seedling cultivation

Polygonatum is generally propagated mainly by rhizomes. Choose 1-2 year old, strong and disease-free plants. When digging Polygonatum, dig out the rhizomes, choose the tender part at the tip, cut into several sections, each section must have 2-3 nodes, and plant them immediately after the incision is dry. The time is spring, in late March. Place the seeds with the eyes facing upwards, and lay them flat every 10-15 cm. Cover them with 5-7 cm of soil and water them every 3-5 days after planting.

2. Land preparation

Choose a shady and moist area under a forest, at the edge of a mountain forest, or on flat land with shade, deep plow the land, apply about 2,000 kg of rotted farmyard manure or compost per mu, turn it into the soil, then rake it flat to make high ridges 130 cm wide, dig 40 cm furrows, and dig drainage ditches around it.

3. Transplanting

The time for transplanting Polygonatum sibiricum is generally in late October in autumn or early March in spring. The most suitable planting spacing is 30 cm × 40 cm. The planting density is 2000 to 3000 plants per mu. The bottom of the hole is required to be flat and loose, and one plant is planted in each hole. After planting, backfill the topsoil and press it tightly to straighten the plants. After watering thoroughly to help them take root, cover them with an appropriate amount of soil to ensure that the surface of the bed remains level. Water thoroughly again one week after transplanting to increase the survival rate.

4. Field management

After the Polygonatum sibiricum is planted and survives, it needs to be covered with straw, leaves, hay, etc. in time to keep warm and retain moisture. The Polygonatum sibiricum plant has thin and tall stalks and is weak in its ability to hold down grass. Bamboo or wooden strips can be used as supports to fix the Polygonatum sibiricum and prevent it from falling over.

Every year, top dressing is carried out in combination with tillage and weeding. The fertilizer for Polygonatum sibiricum is mainly nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and appropriate amounts of trace elements. Fertilizer is applied twice in winter and summer. Winter fertilizer is applied in combination with field preparation during winter tillage. After fertilization, the field is prepared and covered with soil to provide nutrients for the germination of spring seedlings. Summer fertilizer is applied after all seedlings have emerged in late spring and early summer. Fertilizer is applied after all weeds have been removed to promote plant growth. The manure applied should be fully decomposed, and it is best to use high-temperature composting.

The plant likes moisture. If drought persists, water should be applied in time to ensure penetration, and flooding should be avoided. When the rainy season arrives, drainage ditches should be dug in time to drain the accumulated water in time to prevent root rot.
