Phalaenopsis cultivation methods and precautions

Phalaenopsis cultivation methods and precautions

1. Lighting

Phalaenopsis does not require much light, especially during its flowering period. The plant can be placed in a room with bright diffuse light. Weak light can also prolong the flowering period of Phalaenopsis. After the flowers of the plant fade, it only needs to be exposed to direct sunlight for 2-3 hours a day.

2. Temperature

The most suitable growth temperature for Phalaenopsis is 25-35℃. Once the night temperature is lower than 10℃, the flower stems and leaves of Phalaenopsis will become soft, and brown frost spots will appear on the leaves. Therefore, the maintenance temperature must be kept above 10℃ in winter.

3. Watering

Phalaenopsis is mostly cultivated with sphagnum moss. You can usually put your hand into the sphagnum moss and feel whether it is dry. Then, through a transparent plastic basin, observe the roots of the Phalaenopsis turning white. When only the root tips are moist, you can use the immersion basin method to water the Phalaenopsis thoroughly.

4. Humidity

Phalaenopsis likes moisture, so it is best to maintain a relatively high air humidity. If conditions permit, you can place a humidifier next to the plant. If there is no humidifier, you can spray water around the plant frequently to increase the humidity. Be careful not to spray water on the flowers and leaves of the plant.

5. Fertilization

Phalaenopsis is usually planted with sphagnum moss and tree bark, and it is also necessary to apply fertilizer and water during the growth period of the plant, but it should be a thin fertilizer, such as special nutrient solution for orchids, and avoid applying uncomposted organic fertilizer.

6. Pests and diseases

When cultivating Phalaenopsis, it is prone to soft rot, brown spot disease, as well as scale insects, red spiders and other damages. You can regularly spray carbendazim and Flower Protector to prevent and control them.
