What to do if fern leaves turn yellow or roots rot

What to do if fern leaves turn yellow or roots rot

Causes of yellowing leaves and root rot in ferns

Lack of oxygen

Excessive moisture content in the potting soil or nutrient solution will cause the roots to lack oxygen and rot.

Strong light exposure

Ferns prefer shade. If they are often exposed to direct sunlight or strong light during their normal growth process, the surrounding air will become dry and the leaves will turn yellow.

Air Drying

Ferns like moisture. If the soil in the pot is dry or the surrounding humidity is too low, the leaves will also turn yellow.

Improper maintenance

If the ferns are not properly cared for, such as diseased leaves are not cleaned up, a lot of fallen leaves will accumulate in the pot, causing the remaining leaves to not absorb enough nutrients and turn yellow.

How to solve the problem of yellow leaves and rotten roots of ferns

Increase humidity

Ferns are moisture-loving plants. If you often forget to water them, the leaves will turn yellow and wilt. At this time, you can find a tray, fill it with water, or put a few stones to increase the humidity.

Maintaining Temperature

Ferns are also warm-loving plants. The temperature during their normal growing period should not be lower than 20°C, especially in winter, the temperature should not be too low, otherwise they will get frostbite.

Water moderately

Although ferns like moist soil, remember not to water them frequently, otherwise excessive water will fill the soil gaps, causing the roots to absorb too much water and rot or die due to lack of oxygen. First, you need to choose soil with good drainage. Then, you should water it when the temperature is approximately below 15℃. Just pay attention to keeping the surrounding environment and the potting soil moist.

Proper fertilization

Fertilization should be done once a month, not too frequently. Insufficient fertilizer supply is also one of the reasons for yellowing leaves. You can choose special fertilizer for ferns.

Cleaning diseased leaves

When the leaves have turned yellow or rotten, do not lose confidence in the plant. Just clean up the diseased or yellow leaves in time. At the same time, you can spray disinfectants to prevent infection of other leaves.
