Reasons and solutions for water lily not blooming

The beauty of water lilies is very unique, and the planting method is also different from many common potted plants. Nowadays, families with the conditions will use the pond in the yard to plant water lilies . However, the water lilies planted by many friends do not bloom. Let’s take a look at the reasons and solutions for why water lilies do not bloom.

1. Insufficient light

Water lilies are positive plants that require full sunlight to support their healthy growth and flowering. If it is kept in an environment with insufficient light for a long time, the stems and leaves may be lush but the flowers may be sparse or even non-existent.

Solution: Make sure your water lily receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, especially in the morning and afternoon hours. If grown indoors, place it near a sunny window.

2. Temperature discomfort

The suitable temperature for water lily growth is generally between 20-30℃. Water temperature that is too low or too high will affect the growth rate and metabolism of water lilies, and thus affect the development of flower buds.

Solution: In early spring and late autumn, move the water lilies to a warm place indoors or take insulation measures. During the high temperatures of summer, set up shade nets and change the water regularly to lower the water temperature.

3. Fertilization deviation

Water lilies need a balanced supply of multiple nutrients to grow and bloom. Long-term insufficient or excessive fertilization, especially excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer, will cause the water lily to grow too tall and affect the differentiation of flower buds.

Solution: Follow the principle of applying thin fertilizers frequently, apply thin liquid fertilizers every 2-3 weeks, choose compound fertilizers rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and a variety of trace elements, and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers during the flower bud differentiation period.

4. Basin mud and water depth issues

Poor quality of potting soil or inappropriate water depth will affect the fixation of the water lily roots and nutrient absorption, thereby affecting the overall growth and flowering of the plant.

Solution: Choose fertile, loose, well-drained potting soil, and maintain an appropriate water depth, generally between 20-50 cm. The water depth can be slightly shallower in the early stages of growth, and gradually deepen as the plant grows, and pay attention to regular water changes.

5. Plants are too dense

After years of growth, the underground rhizomes of water lilies may reproduce excessively, causing the plants to be too dense. Too many plants in a limited space will compete for nutrients, water and light resources, making it impossible for each plant to obtain sufficient growth conditions. The overall growth potential is weakened, making it difficult to form flower buds and bloom.

Solution: Propagate water lilies by division every 2-3 years, and reasonably control the number of water lilies planted in each pot or each location to ensure that the plants have enough space and resources to grow.

6. Water quality issues

Water lilies grow in water, and the quality of water has a great impact on their growth, development and flowering. Change the water of the water lily frequently to keep the water clean.

In short, regularly checking the health of the plants and taking timely preventive measures can effectively solve the problem of water lilies not blooming and promote their healthy growth and flowering.
