Gardenia leaves turn yellow in winter

1. Low temperature

Reason: The climate is cold in winter. If the temperature is below 5℃, the leaves of gardenia will easily turn yellow, or even get frostbitten or frozen to death.

Solution: If the outdoor temperature is lower than 5℃, move the flowers indoors in time to overwinter. The indoor temperature is low, you can find a bag to cover the flowers, and open it for ventilation at noon every day.

2. Water more

Reason: The temperature is low in winter, and the water in the potting soil evaporates slowly. If you still water the plant at the same frequency as before, it will easily cause waterlogging in the soil and root rot, which will manifest as yellowing leaves of the plant.

Solution: The temperature is low in winter, so you need to control water appropriately, increase the watering intervals, and wait until the soil surface feels dry and the soil in the pot becomes light before watering. Alternatively, you can insert a bamboo stick in the pot, pull it out and wait until the stick is dry before watering.

3. Lack of light

Reason: There is less light and the light intensity is not high in winter. If the gardenia does not receive sunlight for a long time, the lack of light will cause the leaves of the plant to turn yellow.

Solution: The light in winter is warm and soft, so be sure to move the potted plants to a sunny place and let them get more sun to accumulate nutrients. If there is insufficient light indoors, you can set up supplementary lights to increase the light for the plants.

4. Indiscriminate fertilization

Reason: The temperature is low in winter, so you must not apply fertilizer, otherwise the plant will not be able to absorb it and it will easily cause fertilizer damage and yellow leaves.

Solution: Do not apply fertilizer throughout the winter to allow the gardenia to overwinter safely. Apply alum fertilizer and water after the flowers bloom in the spring of the following year to replenish nutrients for the plant and prevent yellow leaves due to iron deficiency.
