Why doesn't osmanthus have a fragrant smell?

Why doesn't osmanthus have a fragrant smell?

The main reason why osmanthus flowers are not fragrant

In fact, the main reason why osmanthus flowers are not fragrant is the problem of variety.

There are several varieties of osmanthus that look slightly similar, but have very different properties and uses. Among them, the varieties of osmanthus with stronger fragrance are golden osmanthus, silver osmanthus and red osmanthus. These varieties of osmanthus have a very strong fragrance when they bloom. However, there is another variety of osmanthus - Osmanthus fragrans, which does not have a strong fragrance and is the lightest. Osmanthus fragrans is mainly an economic crop. It blooms sparsely and has a weak fragrance, so it is rarely planted. If you cannot smell the sweet scent of osmanthus when the flowers bloom, it is most likely that you have planted the Osmanthus fragrans which has a lighter fragrance.

The reason why osmanthus flowers are not fragrant - improper maintenance

Improper maintenance may also cause the osmanthus flowers to not be fragrant. During the growth period, if there is a lack of light or insufficient phosphorus fertilizer, it will affect the flowering of osmanthus and the fragrance will become weaker.

Osmanthus can only bloom profusely and have a strong fragrance in an environment with sufficient light and good ventilation. If there is insufficient light, the plant will grow too tall, it will be difficult to bloom, and the fragrance will be insufficient.

The lack of fragrance of osmanthus may also be caused by insufficient fertilizer. Insufficient fertilizer will lead to poor growth of osmanthus, but you cannot blindly apply too much fertilizer, as it will also affect the flowering of osmanthus. When fertilizing, you can apply a thin layer of fertilizer every 10 days or so, and apply some phosphorus fertilizer appropriately to help the flowers grow more and more fragrant.

In addition, the lack of fragrance of osmanthus may also be caused by stagnant water. Stagnant water will lead to poor root growth and affect flowering. Another problem is seed propagation, which causes many of the excellent features of osmanthus to deteriorate, such as delayed flowering and weaker fragrance.

Other reasons why osmanthus flowers are not fragrant

The lack of sweet osmanthus fragrance may be caused by air pollution. There are a lot of waste gases in big cities, such as car exhaust, which seriously pollutes the air, causing osmanthus to grow poorly, bloom sparsely, and the fragrance is not so strong.
