Legend has it that there were two families in Lushan, Jiangxi Province. One family had a boy named Amu, and the other had a daughter named Alan. The two families lived a happy life, with the men farming and the women weaving, hunting and fishing.

One day, the master of the prince's palace in the city went out hunting and took a fancy to Alan's beauty, so he sent people to bring her into the palace. Upon hearing the news, Amu sneaked into the palace and ran away with Alan. Unfortunately, they were discovered by the palace and people were sent to chase them. Amu and Alan fled to the Wangjiang Cliff on the bank of Hunjiang River, but were forced to jump into the river.

Their parents fished Amu and Alan out of the river and buried them in the jungle on Wangjiang Cliff. In the spring of the following year, strange woody flowering trees grew in the dense forest on Wangjiang Cliff. They were monoecious and had a fragrance that could be smelled for miles. It is said that this is the incarnation of Amu and Alan. To commemorate this steadfast young couple, the local people named the tree "Magnolia".
