Academician Zeng Yi from the Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine conducted research on the carcinogenic effects of substances contained in plants. A total of 52 plants from 18 families were found to contain carcinogenic substances among 1,693 Chinese herbal medicines and plants. Most of these plants belong to the Euphorbiaceae and Thymelaeaceae families. Among them, some ornamental flowers and trees commonly found in citizens' homes and parks, such as Begonia thorniana, Croton rotundus, Japanese cedar, Osmanthus fragrans, tung oil tree, and Olea europaea, contain carcinogenic substances.
