The Legend of Privet

Legend has it that a long time ago, there was a girl named Sadako who married an honest farmer. Both of them are orphans and share the same suffering, but fortunately they still have each other, and they have been living a loving life. However, not long after they got married, her husband was arrested by the government and forced to serve in the army. No matter how much Sadako begged, she could not convince the government officials, and her husband was still forcibly taken away. It has been three years since her husband left. During these three years, Sadako cried almost every day, hoping that her husband would return safely. But suddenly one day, a soldier from the same village escaped and told Sadako that her husband had died in the battlefield. Sadako could not bear the blow and fainted. With the help of her neighbors in the same village, she barely survived. But she still could not accept this cruel fact, and soon after, she died of illness.

Before she died, Sadako said to her second sister who came to take care of her, "My dear sister, I want to ask you to do me a favor. I have no father or mother, and you are the only one who can help me with this. After I die, please plant a holly tree in front of my grave. If he comes back alive, let the tree prove my unchanging love for him." The second sister did as she wished, and a few years later, the holly tree was lush and green. Finally one day, Sadako's husband came back, and he was still alive. His second sister told him everything. He was heartbroken and cried at Sadako's grave for three days and three nights. After that, he fell seriously ill.

Not long after, the holly tree actually blossomed and produced many bean-sized fruits. The folks said that the tree had become immortal and that one could become immortal by eating its fruits. The husband thought that perhaps if he ate the fruit he would be able to go to heaven and meet Sadako, so he picked the fruit and ate it. After eating it for several days, he did not become immortal, but strangely, his illness gradually got better. In this way, the medicinal properties of holly tree were discovered. It turns out that it can nourish yin and benefit the liver and kidneys. As a result, people planted holly trees and named them "privet."
